How heavy is a piano?
Pianos are extremely heavy. Upright pianos weigh from about 175 kg to well over 250 kg, and grand pianos from 250 kg up to 500 kg.
Can’t a few strong friends move it?
Weight is only part of the problem. A piano’s uneven shape, the uneven spread of its weight, and its fragile cabinet and mechanism all make it hard to balance and control. Moving it with inexperienced helpers can lead to costly damage to the piano, and even to injuries.
How many people does it take?
With the right methods and equipment, two or three experienced movers can move an upright piano safely and efficiently. Even a grand piano can be moved by two or three trained movers, provided there are no flights of stairs.
Should my piano be tuned after a move?
Yes. Moving, and the change of room, usually affects the tuning. It is best to let the piano settle into its new home for a couple of weeks and then book a tuning.
